BHS News Report

Bullying on the increase

The number of children that are being bullied via the internet daily is growing everyday. Why do they keep social networks open if they cause such distress? A girl of 12 years old unwittingly became ‘friends’ with somebody much older than her online. This man harshly betrayed her, abusing her via a web cam.

Roughly 33% of all youths are cyber bullied; about 56% of this occurs in social chat rooms. Cyberbullying is also carried out via instant messages and emails.

Bullying is a serious problem. Thirteen year old  Poppy Bracey recently committed suicide after being targeted by bullies for being pretty. She was verbally abused and was pushed to the point where she couldn’t cope anymore and hanged herself in her own bedroom. She was discovered by her family and rushed to hospital but died that day. Her family and friends miss her dearly. The school she attended was Lowton High School in Leigh, Greater Manchester.

Bullying statistics show that roughly 77% of all students are bullied mentally, verbally and physically.

Corey Is Killed by Drug Overdose

The actor, Corey Haim, died suddenly of a drugs overdose yesterday. He was taken to St Josephs hospital in California. He is suspected to have taken an overdose of prescription pills in his mum’s apartment in California. When the paramedics finally got Corey to the hospital he was no longer alive.

Corey became a star in the 80s. He starred in many teenager films. He was best known for being in the film ‘The lost Boys’.

Corey has struggled with a drug problem for many years. One of his friends had told him he would not speak to him unless he stopped taken the drugs. However, it is now too late.

A drinking great gran from Georgia claims to be the world’s oldest person. Antisa Khvichava, who lives in a village called Tsalenjikhi in the mountains of Georgia.

130 year old granny

Officials say she’ll be 130 on the 8th of July. Authorities have her passport showing her D.O.B and pension book issued in the 1960’s. Although she was born in 1880, she only retired in 1965. If her claim is accepted she will take the title of the worlds oldest person from a Japanese woman aged 114 years old.

Teacher vs. pupils at Blairgowrie High

At lunchtime on the 11th of March teachers and pupils went head to head in a football match in aid of Sport Relief. The match kicked of at 1pm and the pupils dominated the game early on. However, the teachers played more strategically in the long run.

It wasn’t a clean cut match as there were injuries on both sides. There was a spectacular clash between Mr Phillips and a pupil; both players ended up with nose bleeds and were knocked out the game.

The game ended 4-3 to the teachers. A surprising result but then the teachers did have four pupils playing on their side!

And finally!

Penguin suit? I’d rather wear an all black shirt

A king penguin has been found with an unusual appearance.  Instead of having the usual white front the penguin is completely back.  Experts describe the discovery as one in a zillion.

It was spotted by wildlife watchers at Fortuna Bay on the south of Georgia, about 860 miles off the Flaklands in the Atlantic.

The king penguin is thought to suffer from melanism, a mutation which turns the penguin black.

Coupar Angus Pipe Band

Coupar Angus Pipe Band is celebrating its ten year anniversary. We interviewed Kevin Douglas, Pipe Major.

Kevin has been involved in the Pipe Band for the ten years of its existence. He told us what the role of pipe major entails: “I am responsible for the day to day running and management of the band. Also I co-ordinate music and events, teach learners and more experienced players.” He represents the band in the community.

The thing Kevin enjoys most about being in the Pipe Band is seeing how players progress in their ability. He enjoys playing at various events. The band is going to Ireland in July 2010 so we asked Kevin to tell us a bit about the plans for the trip. “The Pipe Band, family members and friends will make a five day trip to Donegal in July to take part in the Mary from Dongloe International Music festival. We will take part in various street gigs and also travel to Belfast for the European Pipe Band.”

He encourages young people to join the Pipe Band. The is because it is good to learn a musical instrument and to join a local group.

Other events the Pipe Band will be playing at are local gigs such as Braemar night and there are also various competitions.

World Book Day Interview

On the 3rd of March 2010 the BBC School Report had a Skype interview with Catherine MacPhail, the famous children’s author. She has released over fifty books so far in her career. The first book she ever had published was called ‘Run Zan Run’ which was inspired by her daughter Katie who was being bullied at school.

We asked Catherine which book is her favourite and she found it a difficult question to answer! “It’s like choosing between your children I like them all for different reasons”.

We then asked Catherine what was her favourite book that another author had written and once again she found it difficult to answer, “I like many authors’ work but especially Pride and Prejudice because I loved to read it when I was a little girl”.

After that we asked Catherine her Nemesis series. It is different from the other books she has written. “My publisher wanted something new because all my other books were the same so he wanted a new series with a completely different story line”.

We then asked Catherine what she was planning for World Book Day. She told us that she went to Perth Academy the year previously and gave them a first line of a story and they had to continue the story. The first line was ‘I was at the supermarket and I saw my old school teacher in a queue on my right. This was weird because she had been dead for six months…’

Finally, we asked Catherine what advice she would give to someone who wanted to become a writer. “Just write down possible stories on to a pad or a booklet because it always comes in handy if you are thinking about writing your own book.”

BHS goes to the Scottish Parliament

On the 3rd of February pupils from Blairgowrie High school went to the Scottish Parliament. There were two pupils from BBC School report group; two pupils from the pupil council; two pupils from the podcasting group and two pupils from Modern studies.

We were given a tour of the Scottish Parliament by Murdo Fraser who is a Conservative MSP in the Scottish Parliament. We were taken to the debating chamber. He told us what everything was for and what the latest debate was: “Should the Scottish Parliament help young children to find job opportunities.” He also told us that there is a debate every Thursday at 12.00. Unfortunately we missed that debate.

Blairgowrie High school got to take part in one of the debates being held that day. One of the suggestions given in the debate was by Sean, from our BBC School report team. He said “There should be decent advertisements for jobs so that young people are given job opportunities”. There was a lot of discussion and lots of suggestions being put forward. We were in the Grand debate chamber and Blairgowrie High School was the first school to use the debating chamber for a debate.

Searching for news

The next task for the day was to check newspapers and internet newspapers for the headlines of the day.

We were looking for the stories to feature in our news report.

We discussed the stories as a team to decide what to use, after all we had a lot of interesting stories. We wish we could have used all of them!

Checking the temperature

We took part in the world record for the Largest Interactive Weather Report. The Very Reverend Kenny Rathband was our independent witness as we checked the temperature at 9.15am.

First we checked the digital thermometer in geography teacher Mr Kirkpatrick’s room then we went out to the playing fields and took another reading.

We got a reading of 5.7 degrees celsius from the digital thermometer and a reading of just under six on our thermometer outside.

As we have to round up the temperature to a whole number we entered a temperature reading of 6 degrees celsius.

2010

My name is Callum and I wanted to join the BBC news report because I always watch the news at home. I want to read out the news and be a presenter. Hi, my name is Chantelle I wanted to join the BBC School            News Report group because of the litter that I’ve seen all around the high school.  It’s on the playground and playing fields and I want to help keep the school rubbish free.         Since I joined I have are written an article about the litter around the school and we have taken photos of the litter in different parts of the school. I chose to join the BBC News School Report because I knew it would be great fun and it would improve my confidence in speaking to other people that I did not know by interviewing them. These things have improved my English. The things I enjoy the most about the BBC School Report are being able to interact with other people in the group and with people from different years when we are doing interviews for stories. My confidence has improved since I started the group and my English has improved with the reports we’ve been writing which I think is great!
